Making the girls golf team at Neuqua Valley is determined by a variety of factors:
- Because of the number of uniforms and bags, practice area availability, and the amount of players we can use in tournaments and matches, the amount of players we keep on the team ranges between 16 - 20.
- The variety of player's skill level and the year in which various players are in their high school careers determines whether or not (and how many) we will play juniors on the junior varsity team in each specific season. We generally try to play freshman and sophomores in the J.V. matches but some years (based on the above) we have some flexibility to play juniors on the J.V. level. Therefore it is generally it is easier to make the team as a freshman than the other years (and easier for a sophomore than a junior, etc...) but the coaches reserve the right to consider potential, work ethic, and subjective criteria in terms of which players make the team.
- If a freshman or sophomore is so inexperienced that she will not be able to adequately play in a match as the season goes on, the coaches may choose to not pick the player to be on the team if they are at the bottom of the tryout results and we end up with fewer than 16 players. This would be a rare situation but could be possible.
- Tryouts are scheduled for two – three days each year. Depending on course availability and weather, on the last day the perspective varsity players play 18 holes because the varsity plays several 18 hole tournaments within the first week of tryouts. The previous day(s) of tryouts is 9 holes for both varsity and J.V. (and the last day of tryouts for the perspective JV players is also just 9 holes as the JV team only plays two 18 hole tournaments each season and their first 18 hole tournament is not till approximately a month after the season has begun).
- The overall make-up of the team varies from year to year. Ideally we would have our 8 best scorers at tryouts be juniors and seniors (and they each make the varsity team) and the next 8 scores would be freshman and sophomores (and each would make the JV team) but that rarely if ever happens. Ultimately the number of players and the year in school of the players combined with the scores of the players determines who makes the team at the end of the tryouts. While we reserve the right to keep a player on the team due to coaches’ discretion, the scores, ages, and number of players will determine who makes the team in the vast majority of cases.
